Day 1 - Your Arrival in Ireland and Your First Day at Leisure
If you are flying into Ireland you may well arrive early and be a little weary from your travels. Your first day therefore takes this into account and you will transfer directly to your first hotel / B&B in the beautiful village of Adare, Co. Limerick – “Ireland’s Prettiest Village”. You will spend the day at leisure exploring this wonderful location enjoying the shops, pubs, castle, monuments, and walking routes by the river. You can unwind from your travels and prepare for the tour ahead.
Day 2 – RetroVentures HQ Co. Limerick to Kinsale Co. Cork
200km / 125mi / 3.0hrs riding
After breakfast, you'll transfer from your hotel / B&B in Adare to the RetroVentures HQ just down the road. Here you'll get introduced to your retro ride. Tea, coffee and refreshments will be served. After a tour and safety briefing, you'll hit the road for your first ride heading south.
You'll take a leisurely ride to Blarney Castle in Co. Cork where your adventure begins. You can explore the castle and grounds before the remaining short hop to Kinsale on the south coast of Co. Cork. You can also take an extended tour to the Jameson Middleton Distillery and the town of Cobh, the last port of call for the Titanic. You'll enjoy a lovely night in beautiful Kinsale in its coastal waterside location.
Day 3 - Kinsale Co. Cork to Glengarriff Co. Cork
300km / 190mi / 5.0hrs riding
Today you'll join the Wild Atlantic Way. The Wild Atlantic Way is the world’s longest defined coastal touring route. Today you’ll head west taking in Old Head of Kinsale, Timoleague Abbey, Inchydoney Island, Galley Head, Toe Head Bay, Lough Hyne, Baltimore Harbour, Schull Harbour, Toormore Bay, Barley Cove, Mizen Head, Sheep’s Head, Seefin, Bantry Bay, and Glengarriff.
Or tou can take a more direct route from Kinsale to Schull and a longer stop at Mizen Head or take a ferry ride to Garnish Island in Glengarriff. You’ll spend the night in Glengarriff, a most serene waterside location and the gateway to the Beara Peninsula in preparation for Day 4.
Day 4 - Glengarriff Co. Cork to Killarney Co. Kerry
220km / 140mi / 3.5hrs riding
Passing Whiddy Island View, you’ll head to the base of the Healy Pass on the Beara Peninsula and you’ll ride what is probably Ireland’s best mountain riding road. The spectacular Healy Pass takes you to Kilmakillogue Harbour and then anti-clockwise around the peninsular to Kenmare River View, Dooneen, Garnish Point, Castletownbear, and then take the spectacular Cork / Kerry mountain pass to Kenmare. After a break in Kenmare, you’ll head to Killarney via Moll’s Gap, Ladies View and the Killarney National Park on a scenic ride through mountains and past lakes and waterfalls.
You can take a much shorter route but still benefit from the best parts of the ride. This evening will be spent in the heart of Killarney, the capital tourist town of Kerry with its many pubs, restaurants and Irish music venues, and maybe a little shopping!
Day 5 - Killarney Co. Kerry to Sneem Co. Kerry
190km / 120mi / 3.5hrs riding
Today you’ll embark on a magical tour through the Glencar National Park, Blackstones, Lough Caragh, and Glenbeigh. Then it’s onwards around the Ring of Kerry taking in Rossbeigh Strand, Cahersiveen, Portmagee, Valencia Island, Bray Head, Kerry Cliffs, Ballinskelligs, Waterville (Charlie Chaplin’s holiday home), and Sneem.
You can bypass Valencia Island for a shorter ride. This afternoon / evening will be spent at a spa resort overlooking the glorious Kenmare Bay where recovery will be the name of the game.
Day 6 - Sneem Co. Kerry to Dingle Co. Kerry
155km / 95mi / 2.5hrs riding
Today you’ll head deep into the Black Valley, and then onward through the Gap of Dunloe, and head towards Killorglin. From here you’ll continue along the southern side of the Dingle Peninsular and onto Dingle town.
After a leisurely stroll around Dingle, you’ll take the breath taking Slea Head Drive on a round robin back to your Dingle hotel. This is a short day’s riding allowing you to have a more relaxed day and enjoy everything Dingle has to offer – including dolphin spotting by boat!
Day 7 - Dingle Co. Kerry to Spanish Point Co. Kerry
It’s a climb up the elevated Conor Pass to the north side of the Dingle Peninsular today. Stop at the top and take in the breathtaking views either side of the peninsular. You’ll then ride the north shore via Castlegregory and onward to Tralee, the market town of Listowel, an optional diversion to the Foynes Flying Boat Museum, and then take the ferry across the famous River Shannon to Co. Clare. You’ll tour the southern half of the Clare coast taking in Kilrush, Carrigaholt, Loop Head, Kilkee Cliffs and onto Spanish Point.
You can head straight to Spanish Point from Listowell for a more relaxed ride and enjoy the stunning Atlantic views from your hotel.
Day 8 - Spanish Point Co. Clare to Galway Co. Galway
150km / 95mi / 2.5hrs riding
Heading north through Co. Clare you’ll take in Lehinch, the Cliffs of Moher, Doolin, Fanore, Black Head and the quaint village of Kinvarra. You’ll then head right through Galway City where you can stop for an on-foot exploration of this wonderful destination and enjoy everything Galway has to offer including some delicious craft beers, unique to the area. It’s then a short hop to your lake side hotel for the evening.
This is a good short day’s riding to allow maximum time in Galway City and / or maximum time recuperating at the hotel.
Day 9 – Galway Co. Galway to Galway Co. Galway
330km / 205mi / 5.5hrs riding
It’s an exploration of Connemara today. You’ll skip clockwise around the coast of Co. Galway through Salthill, Spiddal, and the stunning Connemara Coastline through Roundstone, Bunowen Bay and into the town of Clifden. You’ll then take in Sky Road, Omey Island and the stunning Killary Harbour before heading to the wonderful village of Cong, Co. Mayo. From here it’s a short ride via Lough Corrib back to your hotel for a second night’s stay.
You can omit Cong for a shorter route and head straight from Killary Harbour to the hotel.
Day 10 – Galway Co. Galway to Westport Co. Mayo
90km / 55mi / 1.5hrs riding
From the hotel you’ll head to Maam Cross and onto Leenane before heading north into Co. Mayo past Doo Lough and into Louisburgh. From here it’s a short ride via Old Head and Murrisk View to Westport.
You can take a direct route to Westport. It is a short day today in preparation for the long one tomorrow! You’ll all spend the night in this wonderful sea-side town.
Day 11 – Westport Co. Mayo to Donegal Co. Donegal
400km / 250mi / 6.5hrs riding
It’s a long day today. Heading north again, you will start exploring the rugged northwest coast passing through delights such as Keel Beach, Keem Strand, Claggan, Downpatrick Head, Lackan Strand, Killala Quay, Mullaghmore, and Rossnowlagh Beach.
You’ll stay the night in the town of Donegal where you can enjoy the town’s nightlife, pubs and live music. A short cut option will shave a good few miles off the day but you’ll still see a wonderful choice of sights along the way.
Day 12 – Donegal Co. Donegal to Derry Co. Londonderry
420km / 265mi / 7.0hrs riding
Another long ride today. You’ll head west and then north along the breathtaking Donegal coast seeing Mountcharles Pier, Sliabh Liag, Doe Castle, Island Roy, Malin Head, Kinnagoe Bay, and through the historic city of Derry.
A short cut route will reduce your mileage a good bit. Tonight we will stay just outside Derry City ready for the bonus day tour of Northern Ireland tomorrow.
Day 13 – Derry Co. Londonderry to Derry Co. Londonderry
290km / 180mi / 4.0hrs riding
A bonus day today exploring Northern Ireland. You’ll take in the Old Bushmills Distillery, the famous Giant’s Causeway and Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge. There is an optional round trip back to Derry taking in the Antrim Glens and scooting north of Belfast City.
Alternatively you can take a direct route from Derry to the main attractions and straight back. Alternatively, if you don’t fancy riding today you can take the day off and explore the fascinating City of Derry / Londonderry. You’ll stay a second night just outside Derry City.
Day 14 – Derry Co. Londonderry to RetroVentures HQ Co. Limerick
400km / 250mi / 6.5hrs riding
Whichever way you go today you’ll cover a good few miles. Your final day will take you back to RetroVentures HQ but take a scenic jaunt across country. It is a long day but you can take it easy. You’ll pass through historic cities of Omagh and Enniskillen before making your way south through Boyle, Ennis, Limerick City and home!
Once back at the RetroVentures HQ, you can return your bike, unload your luggage, get 'de-briefed', and then you’ll be given the option of a final night’s stay in Adare with transfer, or a transfer to your next destination, whether that be the airport or another part of Ireland to continue your holidays. For those flying out the next day, we can arrange overnight accommodation in Adare or at the airport and a transfer to the airport. Transfers to Adare, or Limerick City or Shannon airport are included but a 3rd night’s accommodation will be extra.
